This review is tough to write. I have been a fan of this series from the beginning, but I really struggled to get through this installment. I don't understand it. Cast in Ruin had all the required elements, everything I've known and loved from past books, but for some reason, it didn't grab me. Yes, there were scenes and plot points I really liked, and yes, I got my Nightshade fix (although IMO, he is grossly underused as a character - I'd like to see more of him, not less), but at the end of the day, it wasn't enough. Instead of tearing through the pages, I found myself repeatedly picking the book up and setting it back down. That has never happened to me before. Not with this series. It's still a great series, though, and I'm too attached to the characters and the fascinating world Ms. Sagara has built to abandon ship now. Plus, certain things were set up in this book that may lead to more of Nightshade & the Barrani in a future book (the next one maybe???) Wouldn't miss that for the world! :)
